In relation to the Spanish Catholic hierarchy it is quite common to remember its Collective Letter from the Spanish Episcopate to the bishops of the world published on July where the coup d'état by the Africanist military was theologically justified sic. Isidro Gomá was the intellectual and material author of said letter but he did not decide to write it until May thus responding to the requests of Franco who asked him to publish “a writing that addressed to the episcopate of the entire world with the request that you seek its reproduction in the Catholic press may be able to put the truth to its point.” Gomá then requested the opinion of several bishops on the matter who showed him the drawbacks of its publication. The cardinal overcame such qualms. And with Enrique Pla y Deniel then bishop of Salamanca and with the Falangist bishop Leopoldo Eijo Garay bishop of Madrid they wrote said letter.
Then the bishops were asked to adhere to said letter. There were several bishops who did not sign this document although for various reasons . The bishop of Menorca Juan Torres y Riba and Cardinal Pedro Segura bishop of Orihuela did not sign it but their motivations were not the same as those that caused the negative position of Javier Irastorza Loinaz bishop of Ciudad Real who was a nationalist; the bishop of Vitoria UAE Phone Number Mateo Múgica and the cardinal archbishop of Tarragona Francesc Vidal i Barraquer and it was almost not signed by his friend Justino Guitar bishop of Urgel and co-prince of Andorra whom Cardinal Gomá even threatened if he did not sign his signature on the letter… Over time both Múgica and Vidal would pay dearly for their audacity to confront Gomá. isidro gumMore than thirty-six editions of the Charter were made and it was translated into all the languages of the countries where a bishop governed Catholic interests.
The coup d'état was justified by the will of God and nothing more would need to be added since the bishops were the interpreters of it here on earth. The rest the political argument always at a lower level of importance than the theological argument was trivial compared to the theological doctrinal artillery provided by Gomá in the image . From this moment on the coup drift of the Church plummeted until it became the doctrinal arm of fascism then Francoism and gave a fundamentalist foundation to national Catholicism thanks to which religion became state policy. What happened in Gomá could be seen coming since in his pastoral of January he had stated: “It remains uncontested that if the current conflict appears as a purely civil war because it is on Spanish soil and for the same reasons Spaniards where the struggle is sustained deep down it must be recognized a spirit of true Crusade in favor of the Catholic religion whose sap has enlivened the history of Spain for centuries and has constituted the core of its organization .
